Angomcha Bimol Akoijam is a distinguished academic, visionary filmmaker, and dynamic politician from Imphal, Manipur. A former Associate Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of Social Sciences and a widely respected public intellectual, Dr. Akoijam's election to the 18th Lok Sabha in 2024 as the Congress representative from Inner Manipur marks a transformative step in his journey—shifting from decades of scholarly pursuit to championing the voices of the people on a national stage.
Dr. Akoijam holds an MA and PhD in psychology and has had a distinguished academic career. He is currently a faculty member at JNU's Centre for the Study of Social Systems in the School of Social Sciences. Previously, he served at Delhi University and the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). Throughout his career, he has actively engaged in public issues and democratic movements, advocating for social justice, equality, and human rights.
Dr. Akoijam’s decision to enter politics was driven by the escalating ethnic tensions in Manipur, particularly between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis, which erupted in violence in May 2023. A vocal critic of the government’s handling of the conflict, he has gained widespread support among young and first-time voters, with the Congress party introducing him as a strong advocate for the interests of the people of Inner Manipur.
